How Do Tennis Court Surfaces Wear Out Over Time?

Tennis courts wear down with use and weather. You start seeing cracks, slippery areas, and worn spots where play happens most.

Tennis court surfaces across Meath and surrounding areas

Tennis courts take a fair bit of wear, especially here with the weather.

You’ll often see it first around the baselines — that’s where most of the movement is. Surface starts going smooth there, almost polished from use. Then you’ve got corners that never dry out properly. Shaded sides, usually the north side, where moss starts creeping in.

After rain, some courts hold water longer than they should. Small puddles that keep coming back in the same spots.

We work on courts across Meath and nearby counties — clubs, schools, a few private ones. Some are still being used every week. Others haven’t been touched in years.

What tends to go wrong with a Tennis Court?

It’s usually a mix of things rather than one big issue.

  • cracks opening up, especially after winter
  • worn baselines where play is constant
  • slippery patches where moss builds up
  • faded lines that are hard to follow
  • areas that stay damp long after rain

You might also see old coatings starting to thin out or break away in patches.

A lot of courts are coated too late — once water gets into cracks, the surface starts breaking down much faster.

What do we need to bring the tennis court back into shape?

Some courts just need cleaning, repairs and a fresh coat. Others take a bit more work before you get near coatings.

Main things we deal with:

  • repairing cracks and worn areas
  • cleaning off moss, dirt and loose material
  • prepping the surface so coatings will actually hold
  • applying new coatings
  • putting lines back in properly

The goal is to get the court playing right again — consistent bounce, proper grip, nothing unpredictable underfoot.

Prep work (this is where it’s won or lost)

You can usually tell when a court’s been coated without proper prep.

Patches wearing through early. Coating lifting in spots. Different textures across the surface.

We’ll go over it properly first — cleaning, grinding where needed, sorting out the problem areas before anything goes down.

Skip that part and it won’t last. Happens all the time.

The kind of tennis courts we see

Most jobs come from:

  • local clubs trying to keep courts playable
  • schools with surfaces that have just been left too long
  • community courts that get a lot of use
  • private courts that haven’t been done in years

Some just need bringing back into decent condition. Others are nearly at the point of starting again.

Why people end up getting their tennis court surface redone

It’s usually not about appearance.

More that the court just isn’t playing right anymore. Slippery spots, poor bounce, lines you can barely see.

You can play around it for a while. Then it starts getting frustrating.

Getting the work done

Weather plays a big part in this.

You need a run of dry conditions for coatings to go down properly and cure. If there’s rain coming in, the job gets pushed. No way around it.

Once it’s done though, it needs that time to settle before it’s back in use.
